Geography
The Emirate of Dubai, spread over 3,900 kmē with 1.3 million inhabitants (est. 2005), is the second largest of the seven United Arab Emirates and lies on the southern coast of the Arabian Gulf. Today the city of Dubai is situated on the northern edge of the Emirate, divided by the "Creek", the remainders of an ancient river, now only a narrow inlet of the Arabian Gulf just a few kilometres long.
In former times, it was the location of the once independent cities of Deira, to the north, and Bur Dubai, to the south. Today, Dubai City is amongst others made up of the districts Al-Hamriya, Al-Karama, Al-Chabisi, Al-Ras, Al Garhoud, Al Khwaneej, Al-Satwa, Al-Wasl, Bur Dubai, Deira, Hur al-Anz, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Za'abeel, Al-Qusais, Al Quoz, Mirdif and Jebel Ali.
