History
Dubai is one emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE -Daulat al-Imaraat al-Arabiyya al-Muttahida) and, translated, it roughly means "meeting place".
In the 19th century Dubai was nothing more than a small fishing village. Around 1830 the Bani Yas tribe from Liwa took control of Dubai. It was led by the Maktoum family who still rule the Emirate today.
During this time, the inhabitants of Dubai primarily worked in agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing and pearl fishing. At the same time, vigorous trade was developing. Around the turn of the century, Dubai had one of the largest souks (market) on the Gulf coast.
Due to the liberal economic policy of its rulers, Dubai attracted traders from India and Iran who settled in the growing city. After the British withdrew from Dubai in 1971, Dubai together with Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Um Al Quwain, with Fujairah established the United Arab Emirates, which were joined by Ras Al-Khaimah in 1972.
